Response from the Exam Board

This is the reply which we got from  the exam board from our query whether you could use some found material in our documentary. We are allowed to use around 30 seconds of footage, this will be a great help in creating our project!

Interviewed Neil

Earlier today we conducted our interview with Neil Cameron (Writer for the local paper). During an interview which lasted around 30 minutes we asked Neil about what we should expect from the current crop of players, the owner and the lack of transfer activity in the summer. We got some excellent footage from this interview to use and im sure it will spice up our documentary.

Contacting the Exam board

As a group we have decided to email the exam board to see whether it would be possible to include some non-original footage in our documentary as we believe it would be a great shame not to include some actual footage of the famous atmosphere at St James Park. We were unable to film this ourselves as you are not allowed to take industrial size equipment into the ground on match days and would cost too much to book a private screening.

IMAGES TO FOLLOW.

Exterior shots, second take

This morning we went over Newcastle City centre to film more exterior shots of Newcastles Stadium, St James Park. Thankfully we are happy with our shots this time around. As before we took a vary of different types of shots which will help keep the documentary interesting. Mainly we focused on the structure and size of the stadium but also took shots of the iconic bar outside The Strawberry and also the club owned bar which has been renamed 9 from Shearers. In addition we took still shots of statues (Sir Bobby Robson and Jackie Milburn)

The Pitch

What we found out about the audience:
I found out that the audience is quite niche and must be interested in not only football but also a keener interest in Newcastle United Football Club Ltd.
Description of ideas for products:
The documentary will be centred on Newcastle United and the recent history of the club over the past five years (the Mike Ashley era). It will show the struggles that fans have had to face over this time and how the club has been affected.  We will look to get face to face filmed interviews with top journalists from the region that cover the club. As well as this we are going to try and get one or two former players opinions, comparing how the club is now seen to how it was seen when they played.
We have also managed to get Steve Wraith, a fanzine editor, to take part in a short filmed interview. This will allow us to get an opinion of somebody who speaks on behalf of the fans as part of his job, and see what the general consensus is amongst the supporters, although we will also speak to supporters to get their opinions as well.
Why the product will be successful:
The product will provide an insight into Newcastle United and will target those with an interest in the club and without this product people would not be able to see this. It will show opinions of well-respected people who are connected with the club and also certain fan base opinions.

Typical Conventions of a Documentary.

The typical conventions of a documentary:

§      Voiceover: The voiceover in a documentary acts as a commentary by the film maker; this will be heard over the top of the actual filming. This allows the film maker to be able to speak directly to the viewer, using it as a way to convey information.

§      Interviews: This is a common technique and is used to add a sense of realism to the documentary.

§      Montage: A montage will usually be used as a visual representation of the characters thoughts, and is used to help the viewer better understand what the character is saying.

§      Archive material: There is a use of archive material with things such as - stills, news, footage, newspaper headlines etc. being used.

Planning- Contacting people

For my project I had to contact several people this was for them to either appear in my documentary or seek permisson to film at locations.

Monday 23 September 2013

Planning- Analysis of Documentaries. (Stacey Dooley)

Stacey Dooley investigates the growing drug craze sweeping through Thailand. Yaba, a dangerous mix of methamphetamine and caffeine, has gripped the nation and unleashed a terrifying wave of violence among its users. She uncovers the human cost, visiting a shocking ward full of 'zombie' addicts, many of whom face the risk of long term psychosis, and she also meets users who have started taking the drug as young as 12.

I decided to watch this documentary as sort of a contrast to the genre that I have chosen (Sport- Football). This was so that I could understand the different types of structure which a documentary can have but also so that I can see the idea's of a different documentaries and how it can be presented.

The structure is similar to "Special Report", another of the documentaries which I analysed. It was more presented than anaything else but also contained several interviews.

Planning- Analysis of Documentaries. (Special Report)

One of the documentaries I studied and watched as part of my planning process was "Cesc Fabregas- Special Report".  This was filmed by SkySports and hosted by Georgie Thompson. Throughout the documentary it was based on Cesc Fabregas and his move from English club Arsenal to his hometown of Barcelona.

The documentary explored his childhood and also what his family were like. Also during the feature documentary they spoke to team mate Gerard Pique about them growing up together and what is like being back with not only his childhood friend but also his former team mate. They both grew up playing and learning their trade at "La Masia" which is Barcelona's well coverted accademy which has churned up players such as Xavi, Iniesta and Lionel Messi.

The documentary is mainly structured with Cesc talking about his life, in a less than interview process but less than formal. Also it features an interview.

Chase Sequence (VIDEO)

Preliminary Task P2

We got all of our Chase sequence footage shot in one morning, this was good so that we didn't need to go out and shoot extras when we could be editing footage, but before we could do that we then got a basic tutorial in how to edit our footage, and began to think of music and effects which could compliment the piece.

Preliminary Task P1

For our first task we had to create a chase sequence which had to be a minimum of 30 seconds long, we broke into three groups which were decided via a random pick. I grouped up with fellow class mates; Kaan Kurt and Callum York.

When creating our chase sequence we first sat down and thought of possible plots and twists, not only that but how we would shoot the sequence and who would have in it.

Contents Page (School Mag)- Preliminary Task (REPOST)

This is the final product for the contents page we had to design for our school magazine, I looked at many different style models in the preperation for this but could not decide on any so I went for an orginal design which I came up with myself. Also the images are also all took by myself as it was part of the specfication like I said in my other post. I tried to use a few different types of pictures so that it kept the magazine up beat and interesting.I used a few different types of font and kept a similar colour pallet throughout the whole magazine, this is called a house style. This makes it to that is is conventional to my magazine and sets it out from the rest.

The Front Cover (School Mag)- Preliminary Task (REPOST)

This is the finished front cover of my school magazine, throughout the magazine I developed a house style, this consistsed of a chosen set of fonts (up to 2) and a colour pallet, I went with a bluey sort of colour as it simbolises a new beginging and bright skys which suggests new prospects for the school in the coming accademic year (New school year). In additon I put an outer glow around my main image as gold as this simbolises the star pupil which is one of the main tags on the magazine so it draws back into that which works effectively. I also included links to the Twitter and Facebook pages as this occours a lot now since the introduction of modern technoclogy the use is social networking is a very good way of distrubting and publishing information to a wider audience.

Evaluation Question 7 - Looking back at your prelim task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to your full product?

Evaluation Question 6 - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Evaluation Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

Evaluation Question 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation Question 3 - What kind of Media Institution might distribute your product and why?

Evaluation Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Evaluation Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media products uses, develops and challenges the conventions of a real product in various ways. Since my chosen genre was chart music I decided to use a mellow colour pallet which could be associated with the genre of music. This allowed my magazine look not only professional but also sophisticated.

A convention I tried to follow was a typical layout of a chart magazine front cover; I used this via referring from a style model whilst doing my work. The size of the main cover line was larger than the others and is anchored to the text. This is used in most chart music magazine covers that I analyzed, the main reason I did this was so that I could keep my magazine looking not only professional but also simple to read and clean but another reason for this was because my magazine was not supposed to look like a tabloid style magazine.
Another one of the conventions used was the style of my pictures, although I took a vast amount of pictures I had to use a picture which not only looked good and professional but so that it also helped to reflect the style of my magazine via typical conventions, I used the image as also a background filler as this is quite common with most magazine and not just chart style. Also the fact that the male was wearing a white top against a dark grey background made him stand out but in addition it also made the colour pallet look strong against his T-Shirt and background.

I also chose my masthead to be over the top of my main image this was to show that not only I could keep with the conventions of a typical chart music magazine but also I could break the conventions which usually suggest that the masthead is covered by the models (Main image) head but I chose not to therefore putting my own style into a conventional magazine and producing an original idea against the typical conventions of a chart music magazine. Another convention I followed is the use of colour coding the name in white against a purple background and the taglines in black with a purple glow on my cover lines. This allows the artist names to stick out on shelves but also follows the colour pallet and keeps the front cover look clean and sophisticated.

My contents page was inspired by the music magazine “VIBE” but also contained a lot of my own original ideas about how I wanted the contents page to look and how it represented the whole magazine. Many would say that I followed the typical conventions of a music magazine by using a medium shot as the main image of the contents page. I had my model dressed in a white branded T-Shirt which contrasted well with the background colour of the contents page (Grey). I then placed the image to the left side of the page; this was so that I could fill the right side with various information. I did challenged the conventions of Vibe when it came to size, layout and colour, I also put the page numbers in different colours- not only so that it stood out from what the article was but also so that it fitted in with the colour pallet of the house style of the magazine. I also strayed from typical conventions by adding a “contents” heading which is not done in Vibe magazine; this was part of the process of making my magazine look authentic but also original. I challenged the conventions of Source magazine as the artist used on the cover is the same artist on the contents. This allowed me to put the artist in the spotlight which emphasizes his importance to magazine and this issue is all about him.

My double page spread (Feature Article) wasn’t really inspired by a magazine as such but build up with various music magazines and also my original ideas. But I did follow the layout of Hip-Hop weekly magazine this was because it was clean and easy to read for a teenage audience, unlike the massive chunk of text in Source magazine. I also chose to use a medium shot image to be put on the opposite side to my text, this was so that the audience knew the article was about this person, in addition I decided to add a ‘Artist Fact File’ I did this to make my magazine more authentic and original and thought it would be a good idea to offer extra information to my readers which gave a small insight before the read the article.  Although my magazine was a chart magazine I thought that I’d use a white British male on my double page spread and the photo, this was so that not only he stood out but also so that people could relate as a chart music and not a particular style.

Contents Page, first update. PART 4

As you can see my contents page is almost finished as I have added an image onto the page, but it also needs to be improved vasty and also another image added. In my personal opinion I have tried to keep to a style model as much as possible but also I have also added my own style to the contents page, I think this adds orginality to my piece.

Contents Page, first update. PART 3

As you can see my contents page has came along quite a bit with adding text which include the Features and also Interviews With section. As you can see carried throughout my whole project I have kept a house style with text but also a colour pallet.

Contents Page, first update. PART 2

This is the second update of how my music magazine contents page is developing, as you can see I have again kept the house-style of the magazine and the colour pallet. I have chosen to put the title at the top of the page and also large so that it stands out

Contents Page, first update. PART 1

This is the layout for my contents page, although there is not a lot on at the moment as you can see I have still kept the house style of the magazine by using a colour pallet which is similar to the front cover and also the feature article. I have also added the year of the magazine as a touch for the summer issue.

Evaluation Questions

1)      In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

These questions needs to be answered in full but also need to be answered via different forms of media, for example when answering questions I will attempt to use Essay style but also Audio and Video presentations.

Magazine- Structure, Part 5. Full Magazine

This is the final stage of my magazine of which I have added sub stories, this again is a mazgine filler but also I have used this to keep the magazine looking like a real magazine which is important. In addtion as you can see I have also kept the house style intact with the same text colours and not overusing different fonts.

Magazine- Structure, Part 4

This is the next stage of my music magazine, I have progressed to putting on text which will link into the feature article. This shows that the feature article will be about the "Artist" in the main image and also I have kept the house style of the magazine, in the fact I have kept the Purple font as a large circle shape but changed some colours slightly. In additon I kept the text white as it is in most of the magazine already or at least outlined.

Magazine- Structure, Part 3

The magazine has now progressed further as I have managed to put my Masthead on, this not only begins to bring the theme and house style of the magazine together but also is the main title and name of the magazine, I also decided that my house style will be in the Purple font region, in additon I only intend to use several fonts, this gives it real magazine characteristics.

Magazine- Structure, Part 2

In the second phase of my magazine development I decided I would put a Skyline on the top of the front page this was an added extra to make the magazine have a more realistic feel and it also matched the house style of my style model, in additon it also helped in the fact that it covered up space which would have otherwise not been used and perhaps wasted. I also added the Barcode to give it the "Real Magazine" feel.

Magazine- Structure, Part 1

This is what I first started the process of my magazine, after taking my own orginal images I decided I would use one of my images as my main background. This would then tie in so that I could base mu feature article with my front cover, this then shows the "Artist" on the front cover will be the main feature of the magazine also.

Monday 11 March 2013

Flat plan view

This was my rough draft of what was my flat plan of how my magazine would be layed out, as you can still in comparssion to the actual magazine I have stuck to it pretty well and tried to keep within the guidelines I had set, although more text may be added to the front cover in the near futrure if I decide to. If so I will put an updated flat plan on.

UPDATED FRONT COVER!

This is the latest and much improved persion of my front cover, the main difference is that I have actually took my orginal image and put it in, also I began to tinker with the layout and also with the colour and text pallet. The cover will more than likely be changed before the end as there is still imporvements to be made but at the moment I am reasonably happy with the cover.

Feature Article update

Today I began to write my feature article. I decided I would structure this into different sections, these being one which had a fact file about my "Artist" and also the other section being the main questions asked. I did not use a style model to come up with the structure although the second phase of my structure is usually conventinal in any interview.

Monday 4 March 2013

Front Cover- Update.

I have began to make up my final front cover. The problems have encounterd with trying to match the background of the image and the colour and title of my magazine name. I have to now try and match the background and the image and so it looks suitable.

Monday 25 February 2013

Construction of The Front cover.

This is my current front cover which I have have been working on. This is my first draft of what I have currently done so at this point things could change before the end of the project. I took several images but decided that none were to a standard of which I wanted for my photo's so at the moment I have a picture of the internet in its place but I intend to schedule another shoot. I have kept the writing basic so that it is easy to read. have purposly put the image in the centre of the front page so that it was identified that the magazine main focus would be around the person who was in the picture, I took this layout from my style model which is from "VIBE" the magazine. I also took the style of the magazine for how I would base the whole front cover and not only how I postioned the main image, this was so that the front cover looked realistic but also so that it would have my own edge about it which also creatives orginality.

Feature Article

I am going to write a feature atricle for my music magazine project, I intend to do this in a interview style. This will be based around and up and coming star who is quickly rising through the music industry. The artist will fit into the genre of which my music magazine represents.

Monday 11 February 2013

Planning- Style Model

Before I began to do my front cover for my project I firstly began to look at magazines which were out in the market at the moment which we're similar to the sort I was about to produce. I then began to look at more R&B and Chart magazine as this would be the genre of my magazine.
After looking at various magazines I chose the magazine "VIBE" to be my style model. I style model is used so that you can draw ideas from it and help you stick to a stereotypical theme for your magazine.

Monday 28 January 2013

Images- Planning

For the project we have to take a vary amount of images for our magazine, so I need to now think of the best possible pictures which will suite and take to my front cover well. When taking pictures I need to think about the different types that can be taken and how they will help reflect the genre.

Planning- Location & Pictures

Today I began to have a much indepth thought about the locations for my main images (Front cover, Feature Article, Contents) this is vitally important because as a teacher group we all agreed that the better the image the better the project, so I then began to think of locations which would suite and reflect my genre fully and also the aspects of costume, this can play a vital role in establishing and representing the genere of my magazine.

Its time to manage.

As part of my organisation of a planning, I began to construct a timeline with the aim that I could manage out my project and also use my time well enough to make the project as good as I could. In additon I planned out not only to do planning sheet this week but also dive deeper for some insight to potential style models for my magazine, this will help create my own house style for a magazine but also use a magazine (Real) to help influence me in my decisons and choices.
